Picture this. You crack a tooth on a popcorn kernel. Or maybe an old filling finally gives up. You call your dentist, get an appointment, and then hear the words nobody wants to hear: “We’ll need to put a crown on that.” But what if we told you that same-day crowns exist, and they can get you back to normal in just one appointment? That used to sound like a dream. Here at Lighthouse Family Dentistry, we’ve made it our reality.

What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. That’s a mouthful, so let’s just call it what it is: same-day crown technology.
Instead of taking goopy impressions and sending them to a lab across the country, we do everything right here in our Annapolis office. We scan your tooth with a small, handheld wand. That scan creates a perfect 3D model on our computer screen. Then we design your new crown right there, send that design to our in-office milling machine, and about fifteen minutes later, a solid porcelain crown comes out.
You don’t leave or wait wait. You don’t come back for a second appointment.
Goodbye to Goopy Impressions
Nobody enjoys the old-fashioned impression material. That thick, pasty goop that makes you gag. The waiting for it to set while trying not to breathe. The little bits that squeeze out and get everywhere.
We said goodbye to all of that. Our intraoral digital scanner is just a small wand. We move it around your tooth for a couple of minutes, and the scan is done. No mess. No gagging. And no weird taste. Just a quick, comfortable experience.
No Temporary Crowns to Worry About
Traditional crowns usually require two visits. During the first visit, the dentist shaves down the tooth and places a temporary crown made of plastic or metal. Then you go home with a list of instructions: don’t eat sticky foods, don’t floss too hard, and for goodness’ sake, don’t bite into an apple.
Temporary crowns fall off. They crack. They can feel bulky or uncomfortable. And if one does come off on a Friday night, that’s a problem.
With same-day crowns, there is no temporary. We design, create, and place your permanent crown all in one appointment. You could walk out with the real thing already in place. No second guessing. No worrying about what might go wrong over the next two weeks.
A Crown That Actually Fits
Because we use digital technology, our crowns fit precisely. The 3D scan captures every tiny detail of your tooth and the teeth around it. That means your new crown won’t feel too high when you bite down. It won’t trap food in weird places. It just feels like a natural part of your mouth.
And because we mill the crown from a solid block of high-quality porcelain, it’s strong. It looks like a real tooth. It wears like a real tooth. Most people won’t even be able to tell which tooth has the crown.
What to Expect on Your Visit
Coming in for a same-day crown is simpler than you might think. You’ll arrive for your appointment, and we’ll numb the area to keep you comfortable. Then we’ll prepare your tooth, take the digital scan, and get to work designing your crown. While the machine mills it, you can relax in the chair, read a book, or scroll through your phone. No need to do anything special.
Once the crown is ready, we’ll check the fit, make any tiny adjustments, and bond it permanently in place. The whole process usually takes a couple of hours. Then you’re done.
