How CEREC Crowns Are Milled With CAD/CAM Technology

CEREC crowns Annapolis, MD

When you need one or more CEREC crowns, you might be wondering about the technology behind it. This uses a type of dentistry known as CAD/CAM technology. This was first used in 1985, but there have been many advances since. Read on to learn more about this type of technology for you.

Understanding CAD/CAM technology

There are two terms that are used for the technology for CEREC crowns. The first is computer-aided design, or CAD. The second is computer-aided manufacturing, or CAM. This software allows dentists to do complex procedures, such as making crowns, faster and easier.

Restorations can be created faster using this type of technology. However, it is not just limited to crowns. Veneers, inlays, bridges and onlays can all be made with this type of technology. That way, patients do not need to spend as long getting restorations.

What to expect with CAD/CAM technology

This type of dentistry involves taking customized 3-D images of the patient’s mouth. One or more teeth may be scanned with the technology. A wand is attached to a computer with the right software on it. Then the wand is slowly moved over the teeth to digitally scan them.

A virtual design for the crown can then be created by the computer. This is sent to the milling equipment. This design allows the machine to create a restoration from a block of material, usually ceramic. After this, the dentist can then polish the restoration and help it match the tooth color. For more visible teeth, the dentist might use a shade guide to better match the color.

This process can all be done in the dental chair in about 40 minutes to two hours. That appointment may seem longer to some patients. However, this is the only appointment needed to get a crown. It can save time in the long run by eliminating travel time for a second appointment. This is only a little bit longer than a traditional appointment might be.

Benefits of the CAD/CAM technology

Getting a crown with CAD/CAM technology offers many benefits to patients. This includes a better fitting crown and shorter waiting periods. Crowns do not need to be outsourced to a lab, which means only one office visit is necessary. The patient also does not need to wear a temporary crown.

The technology also prevents the costs of outsourcing. Not all dental offices have CAD/CAM technology, so it is a good idea to look for one that offers it. That way, if a patient ever needs a crown, the patient will have a relationship with the right dentist.
