Preventive Treatment Options From a General Dentist
General dentists offer a range of services. They diagnose oral health concerns, treat oral health diseases and work to prevent issues from developing in the first place through preventive treatment and education. This review details the preventive treatment options that are available to patients from a general dentist.
Types of preventive treatment from a general dentist
Preventive treatment options that dentists typically offer include but are not limited to comprehensive dental exams, dental cleanings, dental sealants, fluoride treatment and dental mouthguards. They also educate patients on good oral care habits, including how to brush and floss properly and what dietary changes they should consider making to improve oral health.
Comprehensive dental exams are routine procedures that involve a detailed look inside the patient’s mouth, checking for signs of dental decay, gum disease and teeth damage. The general dentist also checks for oral cancer and other more severe concerns as well. If any issues are detected, it allows for early treatment and preventing the issue from worsening.
Routine dental cleanings are often performed on the same visit as comprehensive exams. They involve removing the plaque and tartar build-up on teeth and along the gum line and strengthening teeth enamel. Dental cleanings are non-invasive and can protect the patient from issues such as dental cavities and gum disease.
Dental sealants are used for patients that are more vulnerable to cavities on the biting surface of their premolars and molars (teeth that are primarily used for chewing). They are commonly used for children that still have their primary teeth, but adults can benefit from dental sealants as well. They essentially are protective coatings that are bonded onto the chewing surface of teet further back in the mouth.
Many general dentists prescribe a fluoride treatment to patients that have weakened enamel or that are vulnerable to weakened enamel. Fluoride treatment strengthens the enamel by remineralizing it after the enamel has been broken down due to poor oral hygiene, a diet of high-sugar foods and drinks or a lack of regular cleanings. Essentially, it prevents cavities from developing.
Millions of people in the United States have bruxism, which is a condition in which the patient grinds their teeth together at night. Dental mouthguards prevent damage to teeth for patients that have bruxism. Mouthguards may also be helpful for patients that are physically active or play contact sports.
Oral health education
Another way general dentists help patients prevent oral health concerns is by educating them on how to maintain good oral health at home through proper brushing and flossing. They can also educate patients on how one’s diet affects their oral health and what dietary changes could be made to improve oral health.
