How Long Will Hybrid Dental Implants Last?

Hybrid Dental Implants Annapolis, MD

Hybrid dental implants are an excellent option if you are looking for a tooth replacement option that is somewhere between implants and conventional dentures. The former is the closest thing to a natural tooth, but it can get very expensive if you have lost most of your teeth.

Dentures are the most economical way to go. However, they come with disadvantages like slipping around when being worn and difficulty speaking and chewing due to the lack of stability.

What are hybrid dental implants?

A hybrid dental implant combines the stability and jawbone preserving properties of implants with the affordability of dentures. The denture sets are attached to implants, keeping them as secure as an implant would be. With the dentures firmly held in place, the patient is free to go about their regular activities as if they never lost any teeth. They no longer have to spend a majority of their days constantly worrying about their restoration slipping or falling out of their mouth.

Hybrid dental implants can last a lifetime if properly maintained. The denture set attached to it can last up to 10 years.

What to expect when getting hybrid dental implants

The process starts with the dentist evaluating the patient to determine if they are eligible for implants. Once the patient is cleared, a date is set for the surgical insertion of the prosthetics.

During the surgery, an anesthetic will be administered and a cut is made into the person's gums. This allows the dentist to insert the implant directly into the jawbone. Holes are first drilled into the jaw, then four to six implants are pushed into the holes until they are firmly held in place.

The patient is then given up to six months for a process known as osseointegration to take place. This is the fusion of the implant with the bone tissue around it. This holds the implant in place the same way a natural tooth's roots are secured by surrounding bone tissue.

Once osseointegration is complete, the procedure can be completed. The dentist will attach a set of dentures to the implants. It can be removable or permanently held in place, depending on the patient's preference.

Benefits of hybrid dental implants

The reasons why a person might opt for hybrid dental implants over traditional ones include:

  • It preserves the patient's bone tissue: When a person loses a tooth, the part of the jaw that once held the tooth in place begins to wear away. This happens because the jawbone is no longer getting the stimulation it used to. Since implants replace teeth roots, the patient's jawbone is preserved when they opt for hybrid implants
  • It is more comfortable: Dentures shifting when being worn makes them a lot harder to get used to. The wearer often has to avoid eating certain foods like apples and corn to prevent the restoration from falling out
  • It does not irritate the gums: Conventional dentures slipping around in the mouth sometimes leads to the development of mouth sores
  • It increases the strength of the patient's bite: Since hybrid dentures are firmly held in place, the force of the patient's bite is increased as their artificial teeth remain properly aligned when they chew
