Facts about CEREC®

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) is the technology that dentists use to create dental crowns in a matter of minutes. Patients leave the office with the permanent restoration. Get some additional information about this procedure and the expected outcome.

When are same-day crowns recommended?

CEREC crowns are used to treat teeth that suffered trauma, are severely decayed or underwent root canal treatments. Same-day crowns can be used for front and back teeth. However, CEREC crowns are not recommended for teeth with fractures below the gumline. Dentists use 3D scanners to take impressions of the teeth and cannot scan below the gumline. In this case, dentists recommend patients get traditional crowns.

The process

Dentists begin by preparing the tooth to hold the crown. Dentists do not remove as much of the natural tooth structure for CEREC crowns. An optical impression is taken of the tooth and sent to a computer. Dentists design the crown on the computer and send it to a milling machine. The machine creates the crown in as little as 10 minutes.

The appearance

Patients are concerned about the appearance of same-day crowns. Dentists use CAD/CAM technology to choose the proper color and shape for the dental crown. The milling machine then fabricates the crown based on the color and contouring selected. Most people cannot tell the difference between a CEREC dental crown and a natural tooth.

The longevity

Same-day dental crowns typically last as long as traditional crowns. Patients can expect the crowns to last for 5-15 years. Dental insurance policies usually cover replacement after five years. However, patients can make the crowns last longer with proper care.

Caring for same-day crowns

Patients should care for same-day dental crowns the same way they care for traditional crowns. Patients need to avoid clenching or grinding the teeth as that puts too much force on the crown. Sticky foods should be avoided, and patients need to brush and floss daily. It is also important to go to the dentist every six months for a professional dental cleaning.

Do you want a same-day dental crown?

You can get a CEREC dental crown in as little as an hour or two. These crowns are used to treat teeth that underwent root canals, experienced trauma or are severely decayed. Your dentist will prepare your tooth, and a milling machine will fabricate your new crown. The crown will match your natural teeth and should last for 5-15 years as long as you care for it properly. Talk to your dentist about restoring your smile with the help of a same-day dental crown.
