Your Child’s First Family Dentist Visit in Annapolis, MD

Depending on your child’s age and their current oral health needs, their first dental visit may include:

  • Dental Cleaning
  • Digital X-rays
  • Dental Sealants
  • Fluoride Treatment

Dental sealants and fluoride treatments are important aspects of routine dental care for children. Sealants are thin coatings that we paint onto the tooth surfaces.

We typically apply sealants to the back molars, which is an area of the smile that is prone to tooth decay. Once the sealant completely dries, it protects the enamel from decay. We will often recommend dental sealants for children who are between the ages of 6 to 14.

For fluoride treatments, we will apply a fluoride gel to the teeth. After this treatment, patients should not eat or drink for at least 30 minutes to ensure that the fluoride stays on the teeth.

Fluoride strengthens the tooth enamel and protects teeth against harmful bacteria or decay. Patients who are between 6 months old to 16 years old can receive fluoride treatment.

Oral Health at Home

Parents should clean their child’s mouth even before their baby teeth come in. To remove food debris and bacteria from the gums, wipe the gums with a damp cloth.

Once the child’s baby teeth do emerge, parents need to use an infant toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Gently brushing baby teeth twice a day helps create a healthy foundation for future permanent teeth.

Restorative and Cosmetic Care for Adult Patients

As we age, our teeth and gums may need additional dental care due to injuries, infection, discoloration, and loss. In addition, the tooth enamel can wear down over time, which shows the under-layer, called dentin. This dark under-layer can make teeth look discolored.

For patients with stubborn tooth stains, we offer professional whitening treatments. We can also provide veneers or dental bonding to cover deeply stained teeth.

Dental injuries, gum disease, and tooth decay are common causes of infection and loss. For patients with signs of tooth or gum infection, we offer deep cleaning treatments.

Dental extractions may be needed for severely infected teeth. We offer several restorative treatments, including implants, bridges, and dentures. Dental bridges and dentures that are secured by implants offer a more viable, long-lasting option to our patients.
